This week, Labour forced a vote in parliament on the government’s plans to change the planning system to favour big developers. The Conservatives want to remove local residents’ chance to have their say on planning applications in areas which have been pre-designated for development. That would mean that even if a major development might directly affect you, you wouldn’t have a voice.

Even some Conservative MPs are worried about what their own government are planning. Two of them voted with Labour on Monday. But government ministers are in the pocket of their millionaire developer mates, some of whom donate large sums to the Conservative party. It’s yet another example of Tory sleaze.

Back in the constituency this morning, it has been an honour to cut the ribbon at the official opening of the Hope Centre in Partington. This wonderful new community hub on Wood Lane is run by local people, and offers information and advice, a weekly bag of food for just a few pounds for members of the community, help from the foodbank for those who need it, low-cost school uniform and many other forms of support.  Ruth and her team have done an amazing job to turn an old chicken shop into a bright, welcoming and beautiful space, where residents of Carrington and Partington, organisations working in the community and local groups can come together to help everyone live well. A huge thanks to everyone involved!

Finally, it’s Armed Forces Day on Saturday, and Labour have launched a consultation to hear from veterans about their experiences and how we can do more to help. If you are or know a veteran, please visit: labour.org.uk/veterans  – we’re keen to hear everyone’s thoughts.
