Information for constituents who’ve been raising concerns about needing to obtain or renew insurance or make claims as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. I’ve just received a briefing from the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Some good news – you should still be able to renew your motor insurance or make a claim, even if your MOT has expired and you’re relying on the 6-month extension. Your motor insurance will also cover you if you’re volunteering, And insurers will take a ‘pragmatic’ approach if you have to leave your home unoccupied, and you don’t need to inform them if you’ve begun to work at home during the crisis.

But there is less good news on business interruption insurance. It seems this is very unlikely to apply, even if you’ve got cover for notifiable diseases, because COVID-19 won’t have been on the list of diseases covered when you took out your insurance. I’ve pointed out the nonsense of this when no one knew the disease existed until recently, and this is something I will be taking up with the government. Government ministers said that insurers would pay out when pubs, restaurants and other businesses were forced to close – now it seems they probably won’t, and that just isn’t good enough.
