Parliament is expected to close this evening, once emergency legislation giving government special powers during the coronavirus crisis has been passed. This is a week earlier than had been planned for the Easter recess, but early closure is now considered necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19 amongst everyone in parliament – MPs, Peers and, of course, the many staff employed throughout Westminster who help us do our jobs.

We will remain closed until at least 21 April, but we’re looking at new ways for MPs to work during the emergency, including meetings happening remotely. To my mind, it is absolutely essential that we have systems in place that ensure we can continue to obtain information from the government and highlight the many concerns we’re hearing from our constituents. But rest assured, even though parliament isn’t sitting, I’m already working from my constituency to help residents get through this difficult time as best I can. I’m regularly in touch with colleagues to make sure we offer the best possible response to the crisis and that the voices of local people are heard.

I’m understandably receiving a lot of queries from concerned residents seeking clarity about what the measures announced by the government will mean for them, their jobs and their families. My fabulous team (who are all also working remotely) and I are doing our best to make sure all questions are answered. However, please bear with us, as responses may take a bit longer than usual due to the large number of queries we’re receiving and the rapidly changing situation.

I’m also doing my best to  update my website regularly with the latest on COVID-19, as well as sources of advice and information here: https://www.kategreen.org/covid-19/. Please do check my website in the first instance, but if the information there hasn’t answered your query please e-mail kate.green.mp@parliament.uk and I’ll do what I can to help.

Please stay safe and well and carry on looking out for each other during these difficult times.
