Kate visited Thomas Carter Opticians in Urmston to judge an eye-opening selection of cakes at their annual ‘Bake Off’ in aid of Macmillan.
Each member of the Thomas Carter team baked a delicious cake for their customers and members of the local community to enjoy, in return for a donation to Macmillan.
Businesses from all over Urmston also contributed tasty treats for all to sample with Lily’s at Eden Square, Darby’s Coffee Lounge, Emma Lou Cakes, County Grills, Kin Bakehouse, Bus Stop Café, Craft and Coffee, Scrumptious Tea Rooms and Divine Cafe all getting involved.
From paradise cupcakes to chocolate brownies, Kate was given the difficult job of tasting all the cakes and selecting a winner.
After much deliberation and rating each of the cakes according to appearance, taste and texture, Thomas Carter’s very own Lynn was crowned ‘Star Baker’ for her delicious lemon drizzle buns.
If cake tasting wasn’t enough, Thomas Carter customers could also buy raffle tickets to win a tea for two at Darby’s Coffee Lounge in Urmston.
In total, over £700 was raised for Macmillan Trafford Wellbeing Centre.
The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer, where people all over the country host coffee mornings and donate the proceeds to Macmillan.
This year the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was held on Friday 27 September and, as well as visiting Thomas Carter, Kate also popped in to events held at Limelight, Old Trafford and Stretford Public Hall.
Kate said, “I always really enjoy visiting Thomas Carter for their Macmillan Coffee morning – the selection of cakes gets better and better every year.
“It’s great to see a fabulous local business going the extra mile and bringing people together to raise money for people facing cancer in our community.
“I’d like to say a massive thank you to Claire, Bob and the rest of the Thomas Carter team for making me so welcome and, of course for all the delicious cake!”
Bob Thomas Carter said: “It was lovely to see lots of people at the coffee morning taking their time and having a chat. Urmston people have a great sense of community, and everyone loves cake!”
