Kate attended a drop-in event at Parliament to discuss the social care crisis with members of the public and learn about the ground-breaking evidence from the older people’s charity Independent Age of the benefits of introducing free personal care in England.

Personal care means the support an older or disabled person receives for everyday activities such as getting out of bed, getting dressed and preparing a meal.

Currently, according to Independent Age, the amount of support for care an elderly person receives depends on where they live and their ability to pay.

The charity’s ultimate goal is that all older people who need personal care will receive it free at the point of need.

According to a recent YouGov Poll, introducing free personal care in England would be extremely popular. 74 per cent of adults in England aged 18-64 want free personal care for all older people, and 69 per cent would be willing to contribute more to fund it.

Kate said: “Average care costs in the North West region are a shocking £523 a week, and there are more than 16,000 people over 65 in Stretford and Urmston, many of whom may be worried about how to fund their future care.

“Though it’s not always very nice to think about yourself a family member needing care, it’s a vitally important issue which needs action now. That’s why I was delighted to have the opportunity to discuss the social care system with older people and hear their stories, and ideas on how it can be improved.

“Independent Age has made a powerful case on how free personal care could benefit my constituents and ensure that some of the most vulnerable people don’t have to worry about the financial costs of their care in the future. This policy must be considered as part of the government’s consultation on adult social care.”
