Climate change shot up the political agenda while parliament was on the Easter break, with the Extinction Rebellion protests and schools strikes drawing attention to the scale of the challenge we face.
On 23 April, Swedish school student and environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg addressed MPs at a packed-out meeting in parliament. Later, Kate went into the chamber to highlight the appalling problem of air pollution, and to ask the minister for government support for Greater Manchester’s clean air plan which calls for funding to enable scrappage of older, polluting vehicles and to ‘green’ our bus fleet.
Kate was one of 70 Labour MPs who signed a letter to the Prime Minister asking for a full day’s debate on the climate emergency we face.
Kate said, “Climate change is such a vital issue for our future and time is running out.”
