Kate’s campaign to protect homebuyers
A number of residents have been in touch with me about problems they’ve experienced with Persimmon homes in Woodsend.
Residents say they’ve experienced shoddy building work and extremely poor customer service from Persimmon. Indeed, when I tried to get in touch with Persimmon to arrange a meeting about residents’ concerns, they told me that it’s not their policy to “deal with MPs”. This simply isn’t good enough – people should be able to feel safe in their new homes, not be worried about unsafe staircases and dangerous electrics.
A number of other MPs and Councillors from around the country have got in touch with me to say they’ve had similar poor experiences with housebuilders in their local areas too. I’ve raised this matter in parliament twice, am waiting for a response to the concerns I’ve raised from the Minister, and my colleagues and I hope that we can take this further when parliament is back from its summer break.
The government has consulted on improving the housing market and we’ve had reports from the All-Party Parliamentary group on excellence in the built environment, which has proposed a number of measures, including a mandatory new homes ombudsman. You can read these reports in full here.
