Keir Starmer announced a reshuffle of the Labour shadow cabinet at the start of this week, and I lost my post as shadow secretary of state for education. It’s been a fabulous job to have done over the past 18 months – I’ve met wonderful people right across our amazing education sector, and I’ve learnt loads from teachers, education experts, parents, and students. Thank you to everyone who spent time talking to me about education, showing me the work you do, and suggesting ideas and improvements.

I’m now taking some time to think about what I want to concentrate on next, but it will be a real pleasure to have more time to spend on my constituency. I hope there will be lots of opportunities in the coming months for me to get out and about to meet local organisations, businesses and constituents.

But the situation with covid does remain worrying, especially as we learn of the spread of the new omicron variant. We hope to know more soon about how dangerous and infectious it is, and whether it responds to vaccines. In the meantime, MPs passed new regulations in parliament this week to reintroduce some covid restrictions, including compulsory mask wearing in shops and on public transport. Please do take care to follow these new rules – noone wants a repeat of last Christmas, when we couldn’t meet up with friends and family.
