I recently conducted a survey of headteachers in my constituency to ask about funding pressures in their schools. Unfortunately, most told me they were struggling and were pessimistic about the future.

They told me about having to cut support for vulnerable learners, having to make support staff redundant and cutting classes such as music and swimming lessons, or having to ask parents to pay for lessons. What’s worse is that the unfair funding formula means that schools with more deprived intakes are worse off financially.

I don’t want children’s education to suffer because of inadequate funding from the government. That’s why, yesterday I called on the Minister to re-think the way in which funding is allocated.
