Kate has, once again stood up on behalf of local commuters affected by Northern Rail’s shambolic service.
The MP highlighted how residents who use Northern Rail’s Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Oxford Road service continue to face repeated delays and overcrowding.
In response, the Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps confirmed to Kate that the government has begun the process which may even lead to the company losing their franchise.
Last week, during a session of parliament’s Transport Select Committee, Shapps said he had asked the Northern franchisee, the German-owned Arriva, and the government’s operator of last resort to draw up proposals to improve the service.
This could lead to Northern services being brought into direct government control.
Kate said, “I’ve lost count of the number of times over the past few years that I’ve stood up in the Chamber on behalf of residents and called for Ministers to take action on Northern’s shambolic train service.
“That’s why it was encouraging to hear the Secretary of State confirm that he’s finally started the process which could lead to Northern being stripped of its franchise to run the service.
“I’ll be watching the progress of this like a hawk and will scrutinise the actions of Ministers to ensure local people get the decent train service they deserve.”
