About Kate Green
I’m delighted to have been elected as MP for Stretford and Urmston. I’ve come to live right in the middle of the constituency, in Davyhulme, and I’m enjoying meeting local people, and getting involved in local issues.
Before my election, I was chief executive of the Child Poverty Action Group, and before that I was director of the National Council for One Parent Families (now Gingerbread).
I also served as a magistrate for 16 years.

I’m a longstanding campaigner against poverty and inequality, and for a better deal for families. Over the years, I’ve campaigned on a whole range of issues , including against post office closures, for a living wage for local authority workers, and for increases in child benefits.I have lots of experience of government, and national policy. I worked in the civil service for two years. I was also a member of the National Employment Panel which advised Ministers on labour market policies, and chaired the London Child Poverty Commission, reporting to the Mayor and local councillors.
My home now is in the constituency but I grew up in Scotland, where my parents still live. Now I’m looking forward to getting to know as many of you as possible. If you’d like to meet me to talk about local or national political issues , contact me on kate@stretfordurmstonlabour.org.uk
Kate Green’s Honesty Pledge
At the election Labour’s MP for Stretford and Urmston Kate Green signed an honesty contract with people in Stretford and Urmston. This pledge set out Kate’s promises to local people to restore faith in politics after the expenses scandal.
Kate says: “Like everyone else I was appalled by the abuse of expenses by MPs from all political parties. Politics shouldn’t be about the perks or lining your own pockets with taxpayers’ cash. It should be about representing people. Beverley Hughes, who hasn’t had to pay back a penny, and who has an exemplary record, shows us that. I’m going to follow in her footsteps.”
“I grew up in an area like this, with strong communities and people doing their best. I think every MP should live in the constituency they represent. That’s why I’ve made my home in Stretford and Urmston, living in Davyhulme, making my life here with you. I couldn’t be more proud to be an MP here.”
“Every MP should be honest and transparent, work hard, keep in touch, live in the constituency and not do any other paid work. That’s my guarantee.”
Kate has written to candidates from the other main parties calling on them to join her campaign to renew trust between all politicians and the public.
The pledges made by Kate were as follows:
· I will vote for reform of the expenses system.
· I will publish my expenses monthly on my website and send a paper copy to any constituent upon request.
· I will continue to live here in the constituency. This is my main home.
· I will work for you fulltime and will not take any other paid work outside Parliament.
· I will use my constituency office to always stay in touch with local people. From July, my claims will be published here.
My Declaration Of Interests will be available here.
