About Stretford & Urmston

The Trafford constituency of Stretford and Urmston is situated between Irlam and Sale and has a population of around 93,000. It is multicultural in its make-up and home to several well-known attractions – namely Old Trafford cricket ground, the Trafford Centre shopping hub and the Theatre of Dreams, which is of course the home ground of Manchester United.

As a consequence of the Industrial Revolution, agriculture gave way to manufacturing in late-19th-century Stretford and Urmston, and although the main area of employment in the constituency is now retail, Trafford Park continues to employ around 35,000 people and provide operational grounds for roughly 1,400 companies.

Stretford and Urmston has been represented by the Labour Party since it was first created in 1997. Beverley Hughes served as MP for the constituency from the year of its inception to the 2010 general election, when she stood down and was replaced by Kate Green.

Kate Green has shown her intention to fully support Stretford and Urmston’s residents. She made this clear to the House of Commons in her maiden parliamentary speech, explaining that her constituency typifies what is best about our country – hard-working, neighbourly people who are determined to do their best for their families and for their community, down to earth, but with ambitions, hopes and dreams.
